- Silence Sounds and Spaces Album | Renzo Spiteri
A contemporary concept album featuring unique on-site recordings at prehistoric sites of The Maltese Islands, including music from the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (a UNESCO World Heritage site) audio guide. Silence Sounds and Spaces music album Silence Sounds and Spaces is a contemporary concept album featuring unique on-site recordings at Prehistoric Sites of The Maltese Islands, including music from the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (a UNESCO World Heritage site) audio guide. Silence, Sounds and Spaces is a contemporary concept project inspired by the prehistoric sites spread across the Maltese Islands. What began as a commission by Heritage Malta (the national agency for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage) to score music to the visitors' audio guide of the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), developed into the release of a music album, and the presentation of a series of solo percussion concerts in Malta, the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. In Renzo's words: "All the sounds heard during the introductory sequence and throughout the Hypogeum audio guide were recorded during a three-week period working and experimenting inside the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. I had the opportunity to spend quite a few solitary nights enthralled by the mysteries that shroud this magnificent site. The unique space, the particular environment, the known and the unknown, chambers that vibrate and resonate so splendidly- these were all factors that have inspired me to put together this contemporary score. I have played the barest of ‘instrumentation’ using materials such as stone, clay, wood and voice in keeping with the particular soundscape that I wanted to create for the Hypogeum." Created, produced and performed by Renzo, Silence, Sounds and Spaces is best described as art music with rich, engaging and deeply expressive soundscapes, and a skilful blend of unique on-site recordings at the various neolithic sites (including Ghar Dalam, Ggantija temples, Hagar Qim temples and the Hypogeum), an extraordinary world of sounds and the use of non-conventional instruments to evoke powerful visuals of Malta’s stunning archaeological sites. The result is a “chilling, mysterious, and forward-thinking musical journey” that draws listeners in to Renzo’s personal musical universe. Silence Sounds and Spaces was released in November 2011 and is available for purchase as a physical CD , and for streaming and download on all digital platforms including Bandcamp , Amazon Music, Apple Music, iTunes and Spotify. - Nordic Resonance | Renzo Spiteri
Experimental improvised music shaped by nature and performed by Renzo Spiteri and Richard Craig. Nordic Resonance Nordic Resonance carries the textures and sound world of the Nordic landscape of The Shetland Islands into theatres and performing spaces through an immersive sound performance fusing music, electronics and field recordings. “Nordic Resonance is a contemporary sonic postcard of a place that I lived in for the past six years where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the island’s natural environment and to gather an extensive sound library over an extended period of time. Shetland’s natural environment fed into the creation of this new work, and since the sounds of nature are ever changing and never repeating, Richard and I felt that our own playing should reflect this sense of impermanence. Each performance is created in the moment, allowing a new conversation between nature and music to unfold every time we perform.” Renzo Spiteri At the geographic crossroads between Scotland and Scandinavia where the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea, The Shetland Islands are distinguished by a landscape of natural magnificence, bird calls, whale song, the force of the wind, and the ever-changing moods of the coastline and the sea. Using sound as a lived experience of place and developed through deep listening and extended engagement with the Shetland environment, Nordic Resonance explores how sound can carry the presence of landscape and its atmosphere beyond the place of origin and into theatres and performance spaces. Environmental sounds, whether presented in their pure form or transformed into abstracted textures, are key elements that shaped the creation of Nordic Resonance, with the musicians responding to, reacting against, and creating counterpoints to the field recordings. The result is a conversation: between environment and artist, between sound and sensation, between what is heard and what lies just beneath. Instruments, found sounds, and live processing blur the lines between the human and the elemental creating an immersive invocation of place through sound, and offering a space for resonance and reflection, where audiences can slow down and listen closely. Renzo Spiteri’s performance practice is expansive, weaving percussion, found objects, live electronics, and improvisation into richly textured experiences. Winner of the 2025 Royal Television Society Craft and Design Award (Sound - Non-Scripted) and a 2025 Emmy® News and Documentary Nominee (Outstanding Sound - Documentary), Renzo has over three decades of international performance experience, performing across genres ranging from spoken word and world music to jazz, classical, and experimental work. Praised by Gramophone Magazine for his “primal, at times ecstatic state of Fauvist force,” Richard Craig has developed a distinctive approach to contemporary flute performance. - Sonic Outreach | Renzo Spiteri
A participatory arts project that explores familiar spaces, and celebrates and engages with rural and urban environments through sound with the use of audio technology and creative strategies. Sonic Outreach Sonic Outreach is a participatory arts project that explores familiar spaces, and celebrates and engages with rural and urban environments through sound with the use of audio technology and creative strategies. Under the artistic and technical guidance of sound artist Renzo Spiteri, a cohort of people of any age fulfil the roles of project participants, collaborators, artistic creators and beneficiaries of this project. Through on-the-ground, sensory-rich activities and artistic creation, participants discover and glean hidden sounds within their environment. The whole process is aimed at promoting increased mindful engagement with familiar spaces and phenomena, improve participants’ awareness and sensitivity to their surroundings, and to use the data collected as creative tools. Experience in using audio equipment, or knowledge of sound is not required. Each session is introduced with information about the use of equipment, what to listen out for and best practices in field recordings. Under Renzo's guidance, participants are asked to work in pairs to create their own sound art pieces using material gleaned during the practical session/s. In designing each work, through layering of recordings and placements of sounds, participants project the creative interplay that emerges from their engagement with place and sonic events, and the treatment of each location as a field of so many inventive possibilities. "Aside from the beauty of exploring new sights and sounds, it was genuinely enjoyable and even therapeutic...an aural extension into the unheard; a revelation of sound, of a living and palpable presence." "An enjoyable new experience, well worth taking part in. Thank you." "It was a really enjoyable day" "You did an excellent job despite the weather & thank you for allowing us to participate especially as my daughter was younger than the age suggested." "Insightful and fascinating morning. Thank you." "I loved taking part in the project, the kids got so much out of it too! Something we'd never done before although we have lived on an island all our lives! Sometimes you need a prod to look more closely at what's right there in front of you!" "Thank you very much for a most enjoyable time. It was enlightening to focus on the sounds of the natural world, when normally I’m so visually driven. It was a great experience." "What an incredibly intimate way to explore the rich tapestry of sounds the islands have to offer…so, so many we are unable to hear without aid, or which go unnoticed as sight overwhelms sound. And what a lesson in stillness, patience and obedience. Or “obedience” rather (ob-audire, “listen to”) to the natural world…listening to its multi-layered voice, as if speaking to us directly, so that we may, at last, listen." "Brilliant initiative and so well delivered." Past Workshops Sonic Outreach (The Shetland Islands, Scotland) Sonic Outreach (Shetland) explored, celebrated and promoted coastal areas in The Shetland Islands. Thirty nine participants in eight locations across Shetland engaged with this project, generating 468 audio field recordings the nature of which not only demonstrated their listening experiences of Shetland’s coasts and waters, but also a particular level of engagement with what the surroundings had to offer, often in a very playful manner. What unfolded from each set of recordings was a balance between natural sounds gleaned from the shores and the participants' interventions in those locations though the use of found metal, wood and plastic objects. Sonic Outreach Shetland was delivered through Curious Pilgrims CIC and supported by NatureScot, through the Plunge In! The Coasts and Waters Community Fund. The fund was established by NatureScot to support 24 community projects across Scotland in engaging and connecting people with Scotland's coasts and waters with the aim of leaving a legacy from the Year of Coasts and Waters 2020/2021. Sonic Outreach (Tórshavn, Faroe Islands) Sonic Outreach (Tórshavn) was delivered at Glasir, the largest educational institution in the Faroe Islands. Music and audio engineering students took part in the project consisting of a series of workshops and field recording sessions in around Glasir, and which led to the creation of a new quadraphonic sound installation Glasir Walkabouts: A Journey in Sounds, Places and Reflections. Sonic Outreach (Tórshavn) was supported by Arts Council Malta, as part of Nordic Music Days Festival 2021. Photos: Gaby Giacchino shot at Glasir during Sonic Outreach (Tórshavn)

- Drift Into An Elsewhere | Renzo Spiteri
A contemplative sonic narrative that combines music, spoken word, soundscapes and field recordings of the natural environment gleaned from different locations in The Shetland Islands. Drift Into An Elsewhere Drift Into An Elsewhere is a contemplative sonic narrative capturing the deep connection between human emotion and nature through music, soundscapes and field recordings of the natural environment of Shetland. Drift Into An Elsewhere is a quiet, contemplative and meditative sonic experience. Working with percussion, electronics, soundscapes, spoken word and field recordings of the natural environment in Shetland, Renzo brings in his own unique sound to explore the deep connection between music, human emotion and nature. The compositions seek to capture and convey uplifting emotional musical narrative that embodies the themes of hope, resilience, community spirit, collective strength and a profound connection with nature. The creative process and the end product act as a sonic exploration of these themes, weaving a musical tapestry that celebrates life, that reflects the strength, resilience and unity demonstrated by Shetland islanders, either as individuals or communities, during and beyond challenging times of the COVID19 pandemic. The incorporation of sounds from nature from various outdoor locations around Shetland offer a unique and evocative layer, symbolising healing and renewal, creating a connection between the work and the broader themes of life's cyclical nature. Using soft, ambient, layered sounds, Renzo invites listeners to immerse themselves in this body of work and to be transported to an elsewhere, offering a reflective experience that crosses boundaries of music, improvisation and performance. Drift Into An Elsewhere was released in August 2024 and is available for purchase as a physical CD, and for streaming and download on all digital platforms including Bandcamp , Amazon Music, Apple Music, iTunes and Spotify. In February 2023, five Shetland-based artists were commissioned to create works that captured the experiences, during the first Covid lockdown, of people living in The Shetland Islands. The creation of these works was documented, resulting in the creation of a COVID memorial for Shetland - a book titled Mindin’ Tagidder - which formed part of Remembering Together, a nationwide project commissioned by greenspace scotland with funding from the Scottish Government, delivered by Shetland Arts Development Agency in partnership with Shetland Island’s Council. Below is an extract from the book that documents the creation of Drift Into An Elsewhere, Renzo's artistic contribution for this project. - Community Voices | Renzo Spiteri
A participatory arts project that invited the contribution of people to share their life experiences in The Shetland Islands during the challenging pandemic period. Community Voices Memories & Stories of Island People At the height of the COVID pandemic, the world became acutely aware that social restrictions were affecting people in different ways, and there were cases in which people were not feeling or experiencing the support within a community environment. Between November 2020 and February 2021, we devised a project through which people in The Shetland Islands could share life experiences of the pandemic and post-lockdown period. The result of this process was the creation and launch of the participatory arts project Community Voices: Memories and Stories of Island People. Through an open call for participation, people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds were invited to submit first-hand narratives of their lives, stories and perceptions in creative ways, through spoken word, audio recordings, visual arts and writing. Lived experiences are a powerful way of communication and Community Voices was intended to act as a platform through which people could portray the social and emotional effects brought about as a result of the pandemic. People were invited to use the following questions as a point of departure: ~ What losses and gains have you experienced and felt the most? ~ Remoteness, rurality, isolation, loneliness, community, resilience. How do any or all of these words resonate with you in light of your life experience during the pandemic period? ~ Do you have a memory that is particularly related to the pandemic period? The resultant contributions were curated and edited by Renzo Spiteri to produce a 22-minute docufilm. Through the use of words, animation and film, Community Voices unveiled personal perspectives of pandemic and post-lockdown community resilience and human connection. Viewers of the docufilm discover a greater consciousness and awareness of these lived experiences that will resonate with different viewers in different ways. The docufilm, which is specific to Shetland, also acts as a memorial that preserves a moment in time during an exceptional event in recent history, and delivers a strong message of hope for the future and of new beginnings. In January 2023, this project was one of 36 projects across the UK and Ireland to be shortlisted for Creative Lives Awards 2022. "What an amazing collection of voices, music and image." - Anima Animus | Renzo Spiteri
An original score composed for a contemporary dance company, inspired by Mallarmé’s symbolist poem and Debussy’s scoring of Prélude à l’Après-midi d’Un Faune. Anima/Animus Inspired by Mallarmé’s symbolist poem and Debussy’s scoring of Prélude à l’Après-midi d’Un Faune, Anima/Animus is a contemporary narrative and music adaptation which, like the sources motivating it, seeks to push the boundaries of creative technique into new listening experiences for the audience. The original composition considers the symbolic associations of the instruments and phrases in Debussy’s work and builds them into an archetypal story about self and shadow, masculine and feminine, anima and animus, desire and defeat. The piece uses sound as the primary platform through which to tell the story as the audience is invited to travel across six sections entitled ‘Home’, ‘Desire’, ‘Dream’, ‘Shadow’, ‘Fate’, ‘Return’. Whilst ‘Home’ situates the nymphs and the audience close to the sea in a move suggestive that one of the nymphs may indeed be the Calypso of Homer’s Ogygia, ‘Desire’ and ‘Dream’ tell a coming of age story in which the faun reaches outwards exploring, through his imagination, the different possibilities that his surroundings offer him. What he finds surprises him and through a series of primal struggles with himself and Calypso he encounters his ‘Shadow’ and ‘Fate’. The return ‘Home’ is not so much a return to a geographical place, although the sounds of the sea remind us of the beginning of this story, but rather it is a space in which self and other come together, each having grown through the adventures experienced.
